The Piece by Piece Program
To invest in education is to promote the human and social development.

The Robert Bosch Institute, social branch of the company in Brazil, developed the Program Piece by Piece focused on the continuous and planned education which aims to promote the sustainable social development of a community. The Piece by Piece is a program based on small improvement actions, carried out in a continuous and planned, sustained, effective, measurable and shared way. Step by step, Piece by Piece.

Started in 2000 in Vila Verde, located in the Industrial City of Curitiba-PR close to the Bosch factories, the Piece by Piece program identified, at first, the Community’s main needs. From this point started the definition of priorities, action areas, the necessary resources and the entities and institutions to be involved.

During the starting phase of the program, it was encouraged and operated by Bosch and little by little started to be managed by the schools and the community, continuing the ongoing activities and enabling the creation of new projects. The results ended up being so good that stimulated the extension of the program to another community with a similar profile, which is Vila Barigui in Curitiba in 2005.

Premise of the Program Piece by Piece

- School as main reference for the social development
- Continuous and planned Education
- Involvement of collaborators as volunteers
- Evaluation of results

Methodology

With that base, the Program was divided in phases in which the projects and actions must be developed:
- Phase1. Social diagnosis, teacher capacitation, definition and elaboration of projects;
- Phase2. Intervention of teacher projects in school, evaluation and monitoring of results;
- Phase3. Intervention of the teacher’s projects in the community;
- Phase4. Sustainability Strategy, evaluation and monitoring of results;
- Phase5. Monitoring and follow up of the projects developed by the teachers.
Starting from the social diagnosis “pieces” were elaborated according to the main needs identified by the community members. Along with the Social Responsibility Department of the Curitiba Unit of Robert Bosch, the teachers established the program activities and divided them in 7 “pieces” that represented the front lines towards social development.

In December 2007, the program was also brought to Campinas-SP as a renovation of a previous project, the Pure Solidarity project, which received a new concept. In the beginning of 2008, the Piece by Piece program was introduced to the Escola Estadual Carlos Cristovam Zink, in Campinas-SP, located in Vila Boa Vista, near Bosch’s factory.
